pH levels are very important to keeping an aquarium healthy. The pH value has a big impact on many biological processes that take place within the aquarium such as the growth of calcareous algae and corals. The normal range for pH levels is between 8.0 and 8.2 and should not fluctuate by more than 0.3 units within a 24 hour period. If pH levels are too low, this can be the result of low alkalinity levels or due to poor aeration. Possible solutions involve improving aeration and raising alkalinity levels to those of natural sea water or above. The Salifert pH Test Kit can be used in order to accurately measure pH fluctuations in your aquarium in 0.2 pH units increments. The kit can detect pH levels between 7.4 and 8.6. Then the Salifert KH + pH Buffer can be used in order to bring pH levels within normal range. The test kit can be used for approximately 50 measurements.
