Readers of the turkish newspaper, Andre Mango wrote in 1967, can easily get the impression that politics in turkey today is about religion. Indeed, one of the observable trends in turkish political life since the transition from one party government to competitive politics in 1946 was the importance of religion as a political issue. The issue of secularism, of course, became a prima donna in political development in turkey. The turkish reformist wing spearheaded by Mustofa Kemal Attaturk was a pioneer in rolling secularism. But the attempt was not to face no obstacle, not to say failed political praxis in turkey. The reason is that secularism later equated westernization, in principle, contradicts the values of tradition that have so upheld in turkish society: ISLAM.
